The Chestnut Tree

4dbe1f4dd8732c92eef2cee8b908bdc8

The Chestnut tree grew strong

Solitary steadfast and true

A noble vigorous tree

The sweep of its foliage

Drooping so tenderly

Facing the salty winds

High above the stoic sea

With boldness and unswayed surety

The trunk vast and firmly set in earth

Standing awesome in clusters of green

Spreading a dense crown foliage

Holding many years seen

Shelter for the picnic crowds

Camouflage for lovers kiss

Flowers will bloom from lusty boughs

As the air warms and seasons brighten the hours

Leaves of green rustle in summer breeze

Yellow rows of blossoms form a golden cloak

The beauty so fine it’s brightness sublime

Awaiting the shorter coolish nights

Prickly burs form covered like fur

Autumn breeze blusters through once more

As burs crack open nuts tumble

To Earths russet leafed floor

Nuts smooth and flat one side robust

Perfect to gather for a feast with lust

Fires smoulder roasting your find

An ideal pairing with some wine

Nimble hands peel the blackened pods

Hardened by fire the shell cracking its skin

Revealing the sweet meaty flesh within
